What are dentures?

Many people may have heard of dentures or know someone who wears them, but not everyone fully understands what dentures are or how they work. Dentures are a dental apparatus designed to take the place of missing teeth in the mouth. Dentures can be removed, and there are many different types of dentures. Sometimes, dentures are designed to replace an entire row or entire mouthful of teeth. Other times, dentures are only meant to replace a portion of your natural teeth.

Why would I need dentures?

Our Elk Grove Village dental patients choose to receive dentures for a variety of reasons.

If you are missing some or all of your natural teeth, it is important to replace those teeth with an artificial option. One popular treatment option is dentures. You may need dentures because your missing teeth have compromised your ability to speak clearly or to eat the foods you enjoy. You may also choose dentures because they can help you regain confidence in your smile and in your overall appearance. If you feel self-conscious about the way you look, or if you feel like your quality of life has decreased since losing your teeth, dentures can restore some of the function and appearance to your smile.

What are some of the different types of dentures?

As discussed above, there are different types of dentures available depending on your individual needs. If you are not sure which types of dentures would be best for you and your smile, you can always make a dental appointment to meet with Dr. Vishal Advani at our Elk Grove Village, IL dental office. During this dental appointment, Dr. Advani can evaluate your smile, your missing teeth, and your bone structure to help you choose the best course of treatment.

Below, we discuss some of the most popular types of dentures in more detail to help give you a better idea of what may be right for you:

Conventional or Full Dentures

Dentures can either come in full or partial sets. As their name implies, full dentures function as a full tooth replacement option and will replace all of your teeth. These types of dentures are the most conventional option and what you probably picture when you hear the word “denture.” Our dental office can create full dentures for your upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. Conventional dentures rest on top of the gums and can also be removed as needed for sleeping, cleaning, etc.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are best used when you still have one, several, or many of your natural teeth remaining in your mouth. Partial dentures are a good treatment option because they help keep your remaining natural teeth from shifting or from moving around. Just like with conventional dentures, partial dentures are also removable.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Sometimes, patients who are missing all of their natural teeth want full dentures but with increased stability over the style of conventional dentures. For these situations, we offer implant-supported dentures.

With implant-supported dentures, one or more dental implants are placed into the jawbone to help provide structure and a foundation for the dentures. After the dental implants have been placed and the sites are fully healed, our Elk Grove Village dentist can then use these implants as anchors to secure your dentures in your mouth.

Implant-supported dentures are more secure than conventional dentures because they are attached to dental implants as opposed to just resting on top of the gums. Our implant-supported dentures are most appropriate for our dental patients who do not have any natural teeth that can be anchored to dentures. Implant-supported dentures are most commonly found on the lower jaw, or mandible, but can safely be placed on either the top or lower portion of the jaw.

Snap-On Dentures

Snap-On dentures, which are also commonly called snap-in dentures or snap-on smiles, are another type of denture we have available at Elk Grove Smile Center. Snap-On dentures do share some similarities with implant-supported dentures, but the main difference is that Snap-On dentures can be used with either artificial dental implants or natural teeth.

Snap-On dentures are such a common treatment option with our Elk Grove Village dentist because they provide increased stability and help keep dentures firmly in place. When your dentures literally snap onto your teeth and attach to your mouth, you never have to worry that they will shift around or embarrassingly move out of place.

At Elk Grove Smile Center, we most commonly place between 4 and 6 mini dental implants to give our patients the Snap-On denture option. These mini-implants allow us to firmly anchor your dentures to the locator attachment, which guarantees a smile that stays in place. Overall, dentures like Snap-On dentures that are attached to dental implants or remaining teeth are less likely to slip. How do I care for my dentures?

It is important to properly care for and clean your dentures if you want them to last.

Caring for your dentures is relatively straightforward, but it does take practice to learn how. Although dentures cannot decay or rot like natural teeth, they can still become dirty and discolored if they are not well-cared for. Follow these simple tips to keep your dentures in prime condition:

  • Remove your dentures when sleeping: It is good practice to sleep without your dentures in so that your gums, tissues, and bones can recover and relax. Additionally, removing your dentures and soaking them in a cleaning solution overnight helps your dentures remain moist and hold their shape
  • Rinse your dentures after eating: Your dentures will naturally become dirty after you eat. To help keep them looking and feeling like new, simply remove them after mealtime and rinse them with cold or lukewarm water
  • Gently scrub and clean your dentures: You will also need to clean your dentures with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a denture-specific cleaner at least once per day. For many of our Elk Grove Village dental patients, it is easiest to do this just before bedtime. Be sure to avoid whitening toothpaste and strong, abrasive cleaning products

Even if your natural teeth are gone, you can still care for your gums and mouth by gently brushing with toothpaste and rinsing with a mild mouthwash each day. Your dentures will be of the most service to you if you keep your gum line and the surrounding areas clean and free of debris or buildup of any kind.
