Many of us grew up hearing from our parents, teachers, and dentist how important flossing is for oral hygiene and health. It’s common knowledge that we should floss at least once a day to remove any plaque build-up. Studies suggest that most Americans neglect to floss at all, much less regularly.
Flossing is critical because it reaches parts in your mouth and gums that your toothbrush can’t. Food particles, debris, and bacteria can get stuck between your teeth and around the gumline. Flossing dislodges any foreign matter and gets rid of developing plaque. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent gum disease from occurring. Our dental office in Elk Grove Village, IL always reminds our patients on proper brushing and flossing techniques.
How to Floss Properly
Believe it or not, there is a process for flossing properly that not everyone follows, or knows to. Dr. Vishal Advani Is always available to demonstrate for his patients during a dental appointment if there are any questions or concerns.
- Make sure you have enough floss; sometimes patients tear off a conservative amount that can’t reach the back area of the mouth.
- Maintain two inches of floss between your fingers
- Ensure that the floss is stretched tight before flossing between your teeth. Don’t rush the process, be gentle and thorough
- Continue to floss until you have touched each tooth
