What is gum grafting?
If you have gum recession or receding gums, this leaves the roots of your teeth exposed. In some cases, the best way to correct this situation is to perform a gum graft. The procedure involves removing tissue for the room of the mouth—or sometimes using donor tissue—and grafting it where the gum is missing.
Gum recession can be caused by a number of things. Some patients simply brush their tooth too hard or use a hard-bristled brush, which can wear away the gum tissue. Gum infection, or periodontal disease, is another cause of gum recession.
Gum grafting offers patients the following benefits:
- It helps to stabilize the gums, so the tooth root is adequately covered and protected.
- It helps to protect against further recession.
- If patients have been feeling sensitivity where the gums have receded, gum grafting can help.
This procedure is usually quite successful, but patients who have been brushing too hard and causing the gums to wear must change their habits. Often spending some time with the dental hygienist and going over proper brushing technique is all that is needed.
