How long do I wear my retainer after orthodontic treatment?

orthodontics elk grove village Retainers are an important part of orthodontics at our Elk Grove Village dental office. They allow you to maintain and protect your investment in your healthier, more attractive smile.

Retain Your Straight, Beautiful Smile

We know you're looking forward to being completely done with your orthodontic treatment, but if you don't wear your retainer as directed, your teeth will drift back into their original position. During orthodontic treatment, the ligaments that hold your teeth in place are loosened. This is what makes it possible to successfully move your teeth into a more ideal position, but it does take a while for the ligaments and bone to firm up and keep your teeth in place.

There's no one single answer to how long you should wear your retainer following your treatment. Just about everyone will need to wear a retainer for at least one year, but the period could be longer depending on how significant the changes are. Certain types of corrections, such as closing wide gaps, can also make it necessary for you to wear your retainer for a longer period of time. Some retainers are worn full time and even bonded in place while others are removable, which also affects the amount of time the retainer should be worn.
