Does my child need dental sealants?
At Elk Grove Smile Center, we prefer to prevent problems. This leads to better outcomes and less need for invasive dentistry. Sealants are a great way to prevent cavities in our younger patients – and even some of our older patients!
Help Keep Your Child's Teeth Clean
When permanent molars first come in, many kids have difficulty keeping these back teeth clean. They are in a hard-to-reach place, and the teeth have naturally deep grooves that can quickly become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
Sealants are a thin coating that we apply directly to the teeth. They cure in just a couple minutes and the only side effect is a bad taste that goes away as soon as your child rinses. Once the sealant is cured, your child can eat and drink normally. The back teeth may feel a little different at first, but your child will quickly adjust.
The coating completely covers the grooves and protects them from bacteria. Molars are the most common place for children to get cavities, so sealants considerably reduce the chances that your child will ever need a filling.
If an adult has particularly deep grooves in the back teeth that are hard to keep clean, sealants might be a great option.
