Sealants in Elk Grove Village, IL
Dental sealants are an important preventive treatment that protects teeth from cavities and decay. Although sealants are most commonly used in children, some adults may also benefit from sealants.
What Are Dental Sealants?
Once your child begins getting his or her permanent molars, Elk Grove Village dentist Dr. Vishal Advani will likely discuss placing sealants on those teeth to protect them. Sealants are a very thin layer of plastic resin that is brushed onto the teeth and then cured. Once cured, the sealant forms a protective barrier between the surface of the teeth and the bacteria and acids that cause cavities.
Our teeth are designed to serve different purposes. The teeth in the front and your canines are made for biting and tearing while our back teeth (molars) are designed for chewing and mashing. To chew and mash effectively, the surface of the tooth is broad with many bumps and ridges. Unfortunately, these bumps and ridges can also trap food. If the food is not brushed away promptly, the result can be cavities and decay.
Permanent molars typically come in around age 12 or 13. At this age, your child is probably brushing independently, but he or she may not have the patience or the skill needed to properly clean the back teeth. Sealants protect these teeth and prevent food from becoming trapped in the grooves and ridges of the teeth.
Does My Child Need Sealants?
We recommend dental sealants for most of our younger patients. Dr. Advani believes strongly in the power of prevention. Sealants are an easy, painless, noninvasive, and inexpensive treatment that can prevent a great deal of hassle and discomfort in the future.
Most dental insurance providers have no problem covering dental sealants; they would rather pay for sealants now than pay to fill cavities in the future! If you aren’t sure whether your insurance plan covers sealants, let us know. We are happy to assist you in determining not only whether sealants are covered but also the level of coverage your insurance company provides.
Sealants typically last for about five years. We will check the condition of your child’s sealants at their regular check-ups and cleanings. If necessary, we can reapply the sealants. Usually, by the time the sealant has worn off, your child will no longer need them.
Dental sealants are practically invisible. They blend in well with the teeth, and while they can be seen up close, they are unlikely to be noticed, even when your child smiles widely or laughs.
Of course, dental sealants are only a part of our overall preventive dental program. We will also discuss treatments like fluoride supplementation if your child isn’t getting enough fluoride from drinking water or other sources. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is often added to public supplies of drinking water (including that of Elk Grove Village) to prevent cavities community-wide. However, if your family drinks bottled or filtered water, your child may not be getting an adequate supply of this important mineral.
