Wisdom Tooth Removal in Elk Grove Village, IL

Wisdom tooth removal is often required due to impacted teeth causing pain, swelling, bad taste or odor, or due to difficulty cleaning the adjacent teeth.  Wisdom teeth will cause shifting or crowding of the adult teeth as they start to grow.  The ideal age to remove your wisdom teeth is between 15-21 years.  The reason is that the teeth usually aren't fully formed and the jaw bone is softer.  The teeth are easier to remove at this age and recovery after the procedure is faster.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

For many others, however, the process is not so simple. As humans, our bodies are constantly adapting. As our diets changed over the millennia, so have the shapes of our jaws. Today, many of us have jaws that are much smaller than that of our early ancestors – and this means that our wisdom teeth no longer fit comfortably.

What happens instead is that the wisdom teeth may attempt to come in and get “stuck.” As dentists, we call this condition impaction.

Teeth can be partially impacted, which occurs when the tooth breaks through the surface of the gums but doesn’t fully emerge. This condition is associated with swelling and discomfort in the gums and can also leave you more prone to periodontal infections.

Teeth may also be fully impacted. When this happens, the tooth doesn’t break the surface at all and remains lodged in the jaw. This can lead to pressure on your other teeth, changes in bite alignment, and an increased risk of decay.

Post-surgery Recovery

During the procedure, you will be numb and likely sedated and thus the procedure should be pain-free.  After the surgery, you will be numb for 2-6 hours immediately after the surgery.  Stitches are commonly placed and will dissolve on their own after 1-2 weeks. You will be given prescriptions for pain medication, antibiotics, and steroids.  You will apply ice or a cold compress to the sites for up to 20 minutes at a time for the first 2-3 days.

You will be on a soft diet for the first 5-7 days and will need to avoid drinking through a straw or spitting for the first 24 hours.  Warm salt water rinses are recommended 2-3 times/day after the first 24 hours for the first 5 days. Day by day, the sites will start feeling better.

Most patients are back to school or work within 2-3 days.

No follow-up appointment is typically needed

The Importance of Wisdom Tooth Removal for Teenagers

The Importance of Wisdom Tooth Removal for Teenagers

As teenagers approach the late stages of adolescence, many will face a rite of passage that often goes unnoticed until it’s time for dental check-ups: the emergence of wisdom teeth. These third molars can create a host of issues, making their removal a common procedure. But why is this dental intervention necessary for teens?

Understanding Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth typically emerge between the ages of 15 and 25, a time when our jaws are still growing and developing. For some, these teeth can fit comfortably in the mouth, but for many others, they can lead to complications.

Common Issues Associated with Wisdom Teeth

Are my wisdom teeth too difficult to remove?

Dr. Vishal Advani has been removing wisdom teeth at multiple offices in the Chicagoland area for 13 years.  Dr. Advani was the sole doctor at multiple offices, where he only performed the removal of wisdom teeth.  While no tooth is too difficult to remove, there are rare instances where Dr. Advani may recommend not removing your wisdom tooth, such as a tooth that may never drop into the mouth and may never cause you any problems in the future.  There are also rare times when a tooth is too close to your nerve and a coronectomy would be a safer option for you, which is where the crown portion of the wisdom tooth is removed and the roots are intentionally kept to ensure the safety of your nerve.  Outside of these rare situations, Dr. Advani will be able to help you to remove your wisdom teeth.
