Healthy gums are vital to long-lasting oral health. Without strong, functional gums, your mouth and the rest of your body run the risk of a serious infection or disease. Your gums act as a seal around your teeth, holding them in place, and protecting your teeth's soft tissues. To keep your gums healthy and functioning properly, you must practice good dental hygiene every day. Poor dental hygiene can cause a multitude of painful issues, including gum recession.

Gum recession, or periodontitis, is a serious infection that occurs when oral bacteria erode the gum line and expose the teeth. The bacteria produce small pockets in which plaque accumulates, increasing the risk for cavities and tooth loss. Without proper treatment, periodontitis can damage soft tissue and destroy your jawbone.

Dr. Advani can treat your gum recession through a type of periodontal surgery called gum grafting in our Elk Grove Village dental office. Gum grafting seems intimidating, but it sounds worse than it really is. This simple and necessary procedure allows Dr. Advani to reshape, restore, and regenerate your gum's normal form and function. During the procedure, Dr. Advani grafts and uses healthy gum tissue to rebuild your receded gums.

The Three Types of Gum Grafting

There are three types of gum grafting surgeries to fix gum recession. Depending on the damage and your mouth's unique structure, Dr. Advani will use the best method for your individual needs.

  • Connective Tissue Grafts - In this approach, your dentist grafts the second layer of your palate (the roof of your mouth).
  • Gingival (Gum) Grafts - Your dentist grafts your palate's first layer of tissue.
  • Pedicle (Lateral) Grafts - Your dentist grafts tissue from your gums surrounding the infected tooth or teeth.

With Dr. Advani's compassionate and gentle care, you'll be back to feeling yourself in no time.

How to Prevent Gum Recession

Gum recession is a common dental problem that can happen to anyone at any age. However, getting regular checkups, brushing your teeth, and flossing daily can help prevent gum recession. Gum grafting requires an artful hand to restore your smile. Dr. Advani and our team at Elk Grove Smile Center provide each of our patients with the compassionate, personalized dental care they deserve. If you are experiencing gum recession, Dr. Advani can help you repair your one-of-a-kind smile.
