How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns have a fascinating history that circles the globe. Ancient peoples from central Italy to cultures in the Philippines all observed that a damaged tooth could benefit from a covering fashioned from gold, ivory, or bone. However, the first crown made from porcelain dates to the 19th century and is called a ceramic jacket because the dentist would literally wrap it around a broken tooth.

Modern dental crowns are an improvement over their historical counterparts in numerous ways, including durability. However, when considering a dental crown, many patients want to know how long dental crowns last. At Elk Grove Smile Center, we know dental crowns may last a decade or longer.

How We Create Dental Crowns in Elk Grove

Most dental crowns are ceramic dental restorations like the CEREC dental crowns in Elk Grove Village we proudly offer. This new and leading-edge process allows us to design and create dental crowns in our dental office as you wait. We begin by taking digital images of your teeth so we can match the shape and color of your replacement exactly.

Then we send these designs directly to a custom milling machine which carves your final crown from a block of high-quality ceramic, polishing it to a high sheen. After Dr. Advani checks your new crown, he will make any necessary adjustments so that your crown will fit tightly. Then, after cementing it into place, your crown becomes a part of your smile that will last.

When Do You Know You Need a Dental Crown?

Because a dental crown fits over a damaged tooth, it is hollow and needs some natural tooth material to act as a foundation. That’s why we consider dental crowns to be tooth restorations instead of replacements.

A few of the ways we use dental crowns to restore your smile are:

  • Covering a damaged tooth for protection
  • Concealing flaws like cracks and discoloration
  • As the upper part of a dental implant
  • As part of a dental bridge
  • Covering teeth on either side of a dental bridge for extra support
