Improved Diets Can Mean Better Oral Health
Now that school is back in session, many parents are faced with the task of packing school lunches each day. It’s crucial for your children’s oral health as well as their overall well-being to keep lunches healthy.
- Skip the fruit juice. Even juice that is made from 100 percent fruit without any added sugar is still loaded with sugar. Water is by far the best drink for kids, but if they want something more, nonfat or low-fat milk is another good option. Plain milk is best—without sugary additives such as chocolate syrup.
- Pack teeth-healthy snacks such as fresh vegetables and fruits. Not only do vegetables such as celery and carrots provide needed vitamins, but they can actually help to clean teeth when kids can’t brush after eating the rest of their meal.
- Low-fat dairy products, such as cheese and yogurt, are also good for teeth and bones.
- Keep candy, cookies, and other treats to a minimum. Save the sugary candy for special times.
Twice Yearly Visits to the Dentist Are Another Part of the Puzzle
Good oral health starts as early as your child’s first tooth comes in, so don’t put off a visit the dentist when kids are young. Children who grow up going to the dentist regularly tend to stay with that habit as adults, and they are more apt to enjoy good oral health for a lifetime.
