What Is a Dental Crown?

A sturdy cap made to match your smile

A dental crown covers your tooth down to the gum line. It is shaped and colored to match your natural teeth, so you can smile, chew, and eat with confidence.

Our crowns are completely metal-free, so there is no dark line at the gum line, and in most cases we can make your crown while you wait with CEREC same-day technology.

  • Support a tooth weakened by cracks, trauma, or root infection
  • Conceal cracks and deep discoloration
  • Top a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
  • Anchor a dental bridge to close a gap

Long-Lasting Results

Caring for crowns and bridges

With good care, crowns can last for decades and bridges for a decade or longer. Care for them just like your natural teeth.

  • Brush and floss twice a day; use a floss threader under bridges
  • Avoid very hard or sticky foods that stress restorations
  • Visit us twice a year so we can check your dental work
  • Call right away if a crown breaks; it is a dental emergency

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How long do dental crowns last?

Crowns are expected to last for decades. Like natural teeth, they can break under unexpected pressure. We check your crowns at every visit and repair or replace them if needed.

Will I need a crown after a root canal?

Sometimes. If the infection or treatment left the tooth weak and brittle, a crown protects it from breaking. If the tooth is still strong, a tooth-colored filling may be enough.

Are dental bridges permanent?

Yes. Once fixed in place, a bridge is a permanent restoration held by crowns on neighboring teeth or by dental implants. It needs no special care beyond brushing, flossing, and regular checkups.

Why replace a missing tooth?

Missing teeth can cause neighboring teeth to shift, make chewing harder, and over time change the shape of your face as the jawbone shrinks. A bridge or implant prevents these problems.
