Preventive Dentistry

Stop Problems Before They Start

Regular exams and cleanings are the simplest, least expensive, and most comfortable way to keep your smile healthy for life.

Why Prevention Matters

An investment in your smile

It is far easier to prevent a dental problem than to treat one. Brushing and flossing at home are essential, but professional cleanings and exams protect your teeth in ways home care can’t.

Visiting us every six months helps you:

  • Catch cavities and gum disease while they are small and easy to treat
  • Remove the plaque and tartar that lead to decay and infection
  • Lower your long-term dental costs
  • Avoid painful dental emergencies

What to Expect

Your checkup, step by step

STEP 01

Exam & screening

We examine your teeth and gums and screen for oral cancer, gum disease, and loose teeth.

STEP 02

X-rays as needed

Updated X-rays reveal hidden decay and help us check the position of your teeth.

STEP 03

Professional cleaning

A thorough cleaning removes plaque and tartar, followed by polishing.

STEP 04

Your care plan

We review findings, answer questions, and share tips for your home routine.

Extra Protection

Sealants, fluoride & more

Preventive treatments that add a layer of defense against decay, especially for children and teens.

Dental Sealants

A thin, nearly invisible coating that seals the grooves of back teeth, where most childhood cavities start. Quick, painless, and long-lasting.

Fluoride

Fluoride strengthens enamel. If your family drinks bottled or filtered water, we may recommend extra fluoride to protect against cavities.

Oral Cancer Screening

A quick, non-invasive check at every exam. Early detection improves treatment outcomes.

Healthy Habits

A healthy smile begins at home

A few minutes a day makes a big difference. Our team recommends:

  • Brush for two full minutes, twice a day
  • Use a soft brush at a 45-degree angle
  • Floss in a “C” shape around each tooth
  • Rinse with water after snacks and meals
  • Swap soda and juice for water
  • Clean your tongue once a day
  • Rinse with an anti-cavity mouthwash
  • Avoid all tobacco products

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Call Now (847) 472-0236
What role does prevention play in my dental health?

Prevention is the foundation of good oral health. Cleanings, fluoride, and exams reduce your risk of cavities and gum disease and lower long-term dental costs.

How often should I have a checkup and cleaning?

Most patients should visit every six months. Depending on your needs, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Are dental sealants safe?

Yes. Sealants are a safe and effective way to prevent cavities in the back teeth. They are applied as a liquid, cured in a couple of minutes, and typically last about five years. We check them at each visit and can reapply them if needed.

Does insurance cover sealants?

Most dental insurance plans cover sealants. If you aren’t sure about your plan, our team is happy to check your coverage for you.

How can I keep my teeth healthy between visits?

Brush twice a day, floss once a day, and:

  • Eat crunchy, fiber-rich foods like carrots, celery, and broccoli
  • Drink plenty of water instead of soda and sweetened drinks
  • Watch for bleeding gums or sensitivity, and call us if you notice changes
